Description

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is a precursor for the amino acid L-cysteine which when taken orally can cause the body to produce more of the potent antioxidant glutathione that it otherwise would. By raising glutathione levels NAC provides antioxidant effects and similar benefits to taking bioavailable glutathione supplements. In addition to its ability to raise the body’s production of glutathione, NAC also supports healthy liver, lung, and kidney function and may support healthy immune system functioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

When to take NAC morning or night?

Many experts suggest taking NAC on an empty stomach—often in the morning or between meals—to maximize absorption and its antioxidant benefits.

What is NAC used for?

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is primarily used to boost glutathione levels, a critical antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress and supports liver detoxification. Additionally, it can help thin mucus and reduce inflammation, making it beneficial for respiratory health.

When to take NAC?

For optimal absorption, it's generally best to take your NAC supplement on an empty stomach—typically in the morning or between meals. If this causes any digestive discomfort, you can try taking it with a light snack and consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

How much NAC per day?

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is typically taken in daily doses ranging from 600 mg to 1800 mg, often divided into two or three doses throughout the day.

How long does it take for NAC to work?

NAC is rapidly absorbed, so for acute issues like respiratory symptoms, some benefits may be observed within a few hours to days. However, for long-term benefits such as enhanced antioxidant protection and improved liver function, consistent use over several weeks is generally needed, with results varying by individual.
