Description

Dihydromyricetin, commonly called DHM, is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in the Japanese raisin tree and other plants traditionally used in East Asian wellness practices.

DHM has been studied for its potential role in supporting the body’s natural alcohol-metabolism pathways. Alcohol is processed in two main steps: alcohol dehydrogenase, or ADH, converts ethanol into acetaldehyde, and aldehyde dehydrogenase, or ALDH, then converts acetaldehyde into acetate. Preclinical research suggests that DHM may support the activity and expression of enzymes involved in this process.

DHM has also been studied for its interaction with GABA-A receptors, which are involved in the nervous system’s response to alcohol. Because much of this research is preclinical, additional human studies are needed to determine how these effects translate to people.

Beyond alcohol metabolism, preclinical research suggests that DHM may support liver health by helping protect against oxidative stress and unwanted fat accumulation associated with alcohol exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does DHM work?

The body processes alcohol through a two-step pathway in the liver. First, alcohol dehydrogenase, or ADH, converts ethanol into acetaldehyde. Next, aldehyde dehydrogenase, or ALDH, converts acetaldehyde into acetate, which the body can process more easily.
Preclinical research suggests that DHM may support the expression or activity of ADH and ALDH, helping support the body’s natural alcohol-metabolism process. DHM has also been studied for its interaction with GABA-A receptors, which play a role in the neurological effects associated with alcohol.
Additional research suggests that DHM may help support cellular antioxidant defenses and healthy NAD+ balance during alcohol metabolism. However, much of the mechanistic evidence comes from animal or laboratory studies, and more human research is needed.

When should I take DHM?

Follow the suggested-use directions on the product label. Some people use DHM around occasions when they consume alcohol, but there is not yet enough high-quality human research to establish an optimal time for taking it. DHM should not be used to make excessive drinking safer or to prevent intoxication.

How much DHM should I take?

Follow the serving directions on the product label and do not exceed the labeled amount. Double Wood’s DHM provides 300 mg per capsule. An ideal dose for alcohol-related effects has not been firmly established in large human clinical trials.

Does DHM work for hangovers?

DHM has shown promising effects related to alcohol metabolism and alcohol-associated symptoms in preclinical studies, but strong human clinical evidence remains limited. It should not be presented as a proven treatment or prevention method for hangovers.

DHM does not prevent intoxication, eliminate the risks of alcohol, or make it safe to drink more.

Is DHM the same as milk thistle?

No. DHM and milk thistle are different ingredients. DHM has primarily been studied for its potential effects on alcohol-metabolism pathways and oxidative stress, while milk thistle provides silymarin compounds commonly used to support liver health.

Because they work through different proposed mechanisms, they may be used within the same wellness routine, but combining them has not been proven to prevent alcohol-related harm.

Can I take DHM if I do not drink alcohol?

DHM has also been studied for antioxidant, inflammatory-response, metabolic, and liver-health applications that are not limited to alcohol consumption. However, much of this research is preclinical, and human evidence remains limited. Follow the product’s labeled directions and speak with a healthcare professional if you have a medical condition or take medication.
